Buy right once: Your fuel hookup decides most of this: gas needs a gas line, and electric, induction and dual-fuel need a 240V circuit. If you may switch to induction later, ask whether your panel can add that circuit before you renovate.

Before you buy, check:

  • Gas line, or a 240V 40A (or 50A) circuit
  • Magnetic cookware if you're considering induction
  • Hood width and CFM, plus makeup air rules over 400 CFM

Product types

Gas ranges

Open-flame burners; most need only a 120V outlet plus the gas line.

Example: Samsung Bespoke NSG6DG8700SR, about $1,500–$1,800

Electric ranges

Radiant smoothtop elements on a 240V circuit.

Example: Frigidaire Gallery GCRE3060BF, about $950–$1,000

Induction ranges

Heat the pan magnetically; fast and easy to clean. Needs magnetic cookware.

Example: LG LSIL6336FE, about $2,050–$2,500

Dual-fuel ranges

Gas burners over an electric oven; needs both gas and 240V.

Example: KitchenAid KFDC500JSS, about $4,700–$5,300

Wall ovens

Built into cabinets at eye level; pair with a separate cooktop.

Example: Bosch 800 Series HBL8454UC, about $3,550 (list $3,549)

Cooktops

Drop into the counter over cabinets or a wall-oven layout.

Example: Frigidaire Gallery GCCI3067AB, about $900–$1,000 (list $1,999)

Sizing tools

Range fuel and electrical compatibility checker

What your kitchen hookups support: gas, electric, induction or dual-fuel.

How it works: Gas ranges need a gas line plus a 120V outlet; electric and induction ranges generally need 240V 40A (check the model); induction needs magnetic cookware; LP needs the maker's conversion kit.

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

Range hood CFM calculator

Minimum hood airflow from cooktop width and, for gas, total burner BTU.

How it works: HVI: 100 CFM per linear foot of cooktop on a wall, 150 on an island; for gas, 1 CFM per 100 BTU; take the higher. Over 400 CFM, IRC M1503.6 requires makeup air in homes with fuel-burning appliances that aren't direct-vent (local codes vary).

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.
